Internet Operating System (OS ) now making rounds with XIOS/3 XML Based

Xcerion is the new buzz in the air. The Internet OS has arrived it seems. Though in its initial phase and its still in its development, they are claiming big things in a simple way. The OS promises to be easy and better to use than the MAC/Windows and above them it promises to be free. That means you just need a browser that will run the complete OS where you will have free wordprocessing tools, spread sheets and other such stuffs that will make you work simpler. Now when you need a browser what is the use of the OS, May be later they will have a booter that will install itself which will be configured to connect to the internet and then its all yours.

Google too is working on a similar concept. XML based OS, with AJAX and stuff like that. The names still not disclosed but they too will have something promising.

Heres a look at the Xcerion..

Read more from them...

While alternative mobile applications connect only one or to two dots in the mobile world, such as push email or mobile instant messaging, Morange technology is to connect simply everything.

Morange empowers the user to access any information, communicate with anyone and have control on everything from mobile phone. We see the limitation in the current WAP/Browser architecture or isolated program running on each different program device. Instead, we choose to innovate based on the thin-client computing architecture as foundation. We build an open and extendable platform, elegant user interface that works across all different platforms and networks: may it be Windows Mobile, Symbian, J2ME, or Linux. Imagine that Morange is able to offer users the widest choice of applications: Professionals may require Push Mail; yet young generation may prefer instant messaging with their buddies.

Google Knol the encyclopedia . wikipedia

Google's coming up with its own version of encyclopedia, its called 'Knol', with ads and its own expertise. The concept remains the same that of Wikipedia, community supported encyclopedia. The difference could be of a better technology, better search features. But Wiki is not quiet, its also on its way to start a parallel wiki with ads, without disturbing this one.

I can't understand what difference it makes to make it an ad supporting tool that will generate some fantasctic revenues for wiki, but they must have thought it much harder than me. they are experts. Lets wait and watch the gwiki !

Location Masti

Location Masti

Mobiance announces "Location Masti" - inviting all hackers for a month long celebration of innovation, creativity and technology.

Location Masti is an opportunity for hackers to use Mobiance's pioneering mobile location technology with other sources of data/ APIs and build innovative applications

What

Location Masti is a location hack event to build innovative mashups based on Location based services using Mobiance's location technology. The event organized by Mobiance is aimed at exploring the countless avenues to build useful and relevant location aware applications by hackers in a spirit of innovation, creativity and masti.

Mobiance will be inviting hackers to take part in this 30 day event building innovative location enabled applications in the fields of social networking, navigation, local search and a whole lot more. In addition to Mobiance's unique technology to determine the location of mobile phones, hackers can aggregate multiple sources of data, make use of various available APIs and tools to deliver their next "killer" application!

Registrations would be open on the 1st of December, 2007. The event will stretch for a period of 30 days from 15th January, 2008 where the developers will be able to use Mobiance's location feeds and build applications that are useful and relevant to individuals by using their location.

When

Announcement of Location Masti: 26th November, 2007

Registrations: 1st December, 2007 to 31st December, 2007

Event run dates: 15th January, 2008 to 15th February, 2008

Final demo and submission: 15th February, 2008

Announcement of results: 1st March, 2008

Live pilots with winning applications: Second quarter 2008

How

Hackers at Location Masti will have simulated location feeds of 20 people available through a web service that they can use in building their applications. The web service will allow requests for both real time location and the archived location of the person at every quarter of an hour for the past day for use by the applications.

If the participants would like to have live location of privacy approved phones instead of simulated feeds, Location Masti allows that too. Just a form to be submitted online and the location feed will be available.

Details of Mobiance's Location feed APIs and web services will be made available to registered hackers at the time of registration.

Participation

Location Masti is open to all people above 15 years of age and who are accepted by Mobiance as "hackers". Hackers can participate

  • as individual "hacker" or
  • as a "team" of hackers with upto 10 members. Hackers can belong to only one team.
  • Corporate hackers may join in the fun

Number of entries

Hackers or teams can submit any number of hacks but will need to specify their hacks at the time of registration.

Accessing Mobiance location Feed

Hackers will be provided a unique access code for each application at the time of registration. This code will be needed to access Mobiance's APIs and/or web services by the applications. Hackers will be required to maintain the privacy of this access code.

Submission of entries

The hackers can make their application available through a URL for demo purposes subject to presentation rules. For submission of entries, the code will have to be uploaded with documentation and instructions through a mechanism communicated to the hackers by Mobiance.

Web Mapping Illustrated

Developers who want to publish maps on the web often discover that commercial tools cost too much and hunting down the free tools scattered across Internet can use up too much of your time and resources. Web Mapping Illustrated shows you how to create maps, even interactive maps, with free tools, including MapServer, OpenEV, GDAL/OGR, and PostGIS. It also explains how to find, collect, understand, use, and share mapping data, both over the traditional Web and using OGC-standard services like WFS and WMS.

VeoGeo Map (Video & Map Tracking)

VeoGeo takes video sharing to the next level. Now you can map the activities you video, and share even more of the experience!

See what people from around the world are doing, and see where they’re doing it!

* Capture your outdoor activities on your video camera
* Capture a GPS record at the same time
* Upload them to VeoGeo and share them with the world

This could take off with GPS and Video Capture on Mobile Phones.
The N95 could be used in conjunction with Sports Tracker and the 5 mega pixel camera.

As the video is played the map has a route and marker that moves in relation to the geographic position in the video. A nice touch is the graph that shows both speed/acceleration and elevation.

Hotmap: the Use of Virtual Earth

Hotmap - A good way to show your Virtual Earth (Live Maps) user base.

Hotmap Virtual Earth Users
This data is based on a sample of tile logs on servers from January through July of 2006.
It combines server hits from road, aerial, and hybrid imagery in one view.

* Zoom in and out with the control widget in the top left. You can also zoom in by double-clicking the mouse; and zoom in or out with the mouse wheel.
* Pan by clicking and dragging on the map surface.
* Inspect a specific point by right-clicking. It shows the exact imagery available at the point clicked, at the current data level.
* Works in FireFox too!

"Hotmap shows where people have looked at when using Virtual Earth, the engine that powers Live Search Maps: the darker a point, the more times it has been downloaded. Each square represents one unit of imagery, called a "tile". When the program starts, it shows tiles at zoom level 11, which has tiles at a resolution of 74 meters-per-pixel. At the closest in, Virtual Earth has tiles at zoom level 19, 0.3 meters-per-pixel. You can look at higher- or lower-resolution points with the "select data level" indicator at the top."

Now it would be good to see results from Yahoo Maps, Multimap, Google Maps and others...

Microsoft Should Abandon Vista?

"An editorial written by Don Reisinger over at CNet's News.com takes Microsoft to task for the outright failure of Vista. He suggests that Vista may be the downfall of the company as, despite years in development, Vista was delivered to market too early. His suggestion? Support those who are running it, but otherwise ditch Vista and move on. 'Never before have I seen such an abysmal start to an operating system release. For almost a year, people have been adopting Vista and becoming incensed by how poorly it operates. Not only does it cost too much, it requires more to run than XP, there is still poor driver support ... With Mac OS X hot on its tail, Vista is simply not capable of competing at an OS level with some of the best software around. If Microsoft continues down this path, it will be Vista that will bring the software giant to its knees--not Bill Gates' departure.'

Absolute truth !
Daily you will find people asking questions about normal features of vista. Even I got few calls from my friends owning vista machines. One of my friend called me from California. He wanted to uninstall MS Office. I was just laughing on him and was feeling pity about his new laptop. Another incident ! My friend from Symbiosis Pune visited my place last month at IITB. He wanted to access Internet. It took me more than 15-20 mins to configure the net settings for him. I don't know how many abuses bulged out from me while configuring the settings. There are plenty of more bad experiences.... very disappointing indeed !!

Open Layers!

Hey, I am delighted by experiencing the simplicity followed by OpenLayers. I never ever thought that a GIS solution will be much easier to embed in my own website. But, OpenLayer made it possible. Its few lines of html simple code.. and you are done.

OpenLayers makes it easy to put a dynamic map in any web page. It can display map tiles and markers loaded from any source. MetaCarta developed the initial version of OpenLayers and gave it to the public to further the use of geographic information of all kinds. OpenLayers is completely free, Open Source JavaScript, released under the BSD License.

Building a (fast) Wikipedia offline reader

Wikipedia needs no introductions: it is one of the best - if not the best - encyclopedias, and it's freely available for everyone.

Everyone can be a relative term, however... It implies availability of an Internet connection. This is not always the case; for one, many people would love to have Wikipedia on their laptop, since this would allow them to instantly check for things they want regardless of their location (business trips, hotels, etc). Others simply don't have an Internet connection - or they don't want to dial up one every time they need to check something.

Open source...

The world is going the open source way are you ?

What is open source? Is it free?

Open source softwares are those softwares whose source code is open for editing and modification Unlike windows where we buy the software but for changing it we need to buy the patch for it.

Open softwares are like buying a car. We buy a car and we are the owner now, we can do whatever we want to do to the car, change the body, engine, color and the company is no way bothered.

This category of open softwares will introduce to you some very good open source softwares which are at times better than the proprietory softwares yet they are also free at times.

so keep a tab at this space.

Now Earings that store data !!!

I was surprised to see this beauty where you can store data. Almost every one today is aware of the normal pen drives a.k.a usb drives but Kingmax has changed the way a usb drive looks like. When ever we see a USB port, its sheilded with a metal, What they have done is removed that cover and made it more sleek. May be they have compromised with the durability and balanced it on the size. But its worth a look.
I am not aware of the rates of these pendrives that come in different storage sizes ranging from 256 MB to 2 GB or more.

You can carry your data as an earing. You can sport your pen drive in y0ur bracelets, it can also be used as a pendent. Thats upto you how you use it, but don't forget to copy your data.

A short form for weblog, a frequent and chronological publication of comments and thoughts on the web. They usually include philosophical reflections, opinions on the Internet and social or political issues.

Now Google Themes !

Now Google Themes !

Yet another feather in Google's cap. This time they have come up with Thematic personalisation of Google page. If u remember, one of my previous post was customise Google and how to add Google messenger to it, this time its changing themes to your tastes. Though the list is about just 6 odd, like bus stop, Classic, beach, City Scape, Tree House and Seasonal Scape. but to add new themes is not very difficult for Google.

The best part of it is the layout colours change - according to the time zones, night for night and day for day.

This theme will dynamically change to match your time of day, including local sunrise and sunset times. Your location currently is set to: India.

What are u waiting for - Grab it.
http://www.google.com/ig?hl=en

One important thing, if u try it for google.co.in it wont work as it works only on .com, for now so be careful.

What is RSS ?

What is RSS !

Have you seen these images on any site and you are not aware of what is it ???

Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0)
Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91, RSS 1.0)

RSS (Really Simple Syndication also known as Rich Site Summary) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it. You can subscribe an rss feed. On similar lines is an Atom, its also the same thing, with a different name you can say.

How do i open RSS feeds?

You need a reader or aggregators that will do it for you. A variety of RSS Readers are available for different platforms. Some popular feed readers include Amphetadesk (Windows, Linux, Mac), FeedReader (Windows), and NewsGator (Windows - integrates with Outlook).

Google is not behind in this war too. try www.reader.google.com and you can use the RSS reader provided by Google.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A small story about Goolge News.

Google is not a News channel, they were technologists and they are technologists. No where linked to news agencies but are famous for making news.

Ever wondered why is google news so famous. Ha Ha - this is what technology can do.

RSS is what is behind their technology. Almost every news channel has an RSS feed. What google does is, they pick the latest RSS feeds intelligently
from websites around the world and incorporate it in their www.news.google.com
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once you have your Feed Reader, it is a matter of finding sites that syndicate content and adding their RSS feed to the list of feeds your Feed Reader checks. Many sites display a small icon with the acronyms RSS, XML, or RDF to let you know a feed is available.

Want more traffic? An easy way to distribute your news? Then you need an RSS news feed. To start all you need is content you want broadcast, and one RSS text file.

Accessing localhost through the network...

Have you ever tried accessing your localhost through other machines in the network???

Localhost :~ Now wats that???

In computing, in the context of a TCP/IP (Transmission control protocol/Internet Protocol) network such as the Internet, localhost is a reserved name meaning this computer, which means your local computer.

Still not clear ???

I will try and explain in a simpler manner. Suppose we open Internet Explorer, we open google and then search for some thing. Wat happens as soon as we click Search ? Actually what happens is the request from you is sent to the server (Google in this case), which inturn queries its database and then returns the response back to you in the form of result page. So here Google has some server(s) in the backend. There are different types of servers, Web Servers, Application Servers, Map Servers etc etc.... that take requests through different mediums and prcoess them, return the output and wait for the other request.

Where the hell does localhost come into picture in all this ?

Coming to Localhost, Its a Web/App server installed on your machine to make it look and function like the one in reality, As soon as we install a web server like Apache Tomcat or many other servers available, a server starts running on our system, Microsoft XP comes with a default web server called the IIS server, which stands for Internet Information Server. It has to be explicitely installed from the windows disk, Once we have installed the default address we get is

http://localhost or
http://127.0.0.1 or
http://your computername

and the port is 8080

Can we have multiple servers running on one system ?
Suppose we have many servers running on the system, like Apache Web Server, Apache Map Server, Zope1, Zope2, Zope3, Oracle Application Server, etc .... (These many servers run on my system at a time)

What happens is that we can have multiple ports assigned to these services, They have unique port addresses from 8080 to some value (I dont remember exactly) but i have like 8025, 8045, 8055, 8855, 8080, ports assigned for the different services running in my system.

And how do we access these services (localhosts) through the different machines in the network?

Its simple,

say your IP is 10.10.125.3 and you want to access this machines localhost from some other machine with another IP say : 10.23.52.4

So what you do is, on the other machine type the machines ip address which is to be accessed, in this case its your localhost (machine) i.e. http://10.10.125.3 and specify the port which is to be accessed

i.e.

http://10.10.125.3:8025/aa.jsp

thats it !

If you have firewalls enabled in your windows xp system you will need to configure it to open the ports that are to be accessed in the network. That is done as follows:

Go to control panel > Windows Firewall > Exceptions
(see illustrations below)

in that add the port number and the service name and you are through, now your local host website can be accessed through the network.

Theres an alternate to this setting as well,

Go to Network Connections > Properties > Advanced > Internet Connection Firewall (Check it if Unchecked) and down ther is a settings tab in that

Settting > Services > Add a service port and service name,

Done....

How to add placemarks in Google Earth ?

Its very simple to post a placemark on gooogle earth and to share it with the world,

Just open google earth if you don't have it you can download it from the right pane (Google PACK)

For that you need a google account!

To mark a placemark in google earth
just click on placemark icon,
write the heading and description (we can't post empty placemarks) ,
right click on the placemark,
and then select the option of Share/Post.

A browser window will open showing that u are willing to post a placemark. say continue, again it will say that check if there exist a similar post or not, mark those two check boxes, and say continue, if u are not logged in, login and say remember password (it sometimes gives problems), Follow the procedures and then, You are through.

You can send these published placemarks to any one in this world. These placemarks need to be approved by Google, so it takes around a couple of weeks or more to get approval, and once approved you can see them on your google earth or google maps.

If your palcemarks are fresh still people can search for them and download them

and then finally the page opens saying enter the details about the point, wat kind of point is it? choose from a list of it. and then finally enter the title and description and it is done.

You have sucessfully posted the placemark,

To view my placemarks visit this page

I have posted around 150 placemarks from Bombay to pune to mumbra to dubai to US and many more places. Enjoy

technical words

A

Active Server Pages

Part of Microsoft's Server software that allows for the creation of dynamically generated web pages. The files commonly have the suffix .asp

Address

An address is a unique identifier assigned to a web page. The address is more commonly referred to as the URL (Uniformed Resource Locator).

Attachments

Multimedia files that are "attached" to an E-mail. These can be text, graphics, sound, video, spreadsheet, database, or even an entire application. Great to send, but it is not always great to have to download a 100Mb photo of your best friend's cat.

B

Bandwidth

In simplistic terms, bandwidth is the amount of information travelling through a single channel at any one moment in time. On web servers, there is usually a limited amount of bandwidth that any one particular web site can use. So if you get more "hits" on your site continually over a period of time, your ISP will probably ask you to pay for a higher bandwidth allowance.

Body

In E-mail terms, the part of the message containing the most textual content, sandwiched between the Header and the Signature.

Browser

Also called a 'Web Browser'. A browser allows the user to search the World Wide Web and other Internet facilities using a Graphical User Interface (GUI). Examples of the most common browsers are Internet Explorer, Opera and Netscape.

C

CGI

Common Gateway Interface - an interface-creation scripting program that allows you to make WWW pages on the fly based on information from fill-in forms, checkboxes, text input etc.

Cookie

A Cookie is a piece of software which records information about you. It holds this information until such time that the server requests it. For example, if you are browsing around a virtual shop, each time you place an item in your basket the information is stored by the cookie until you decide to buy and the server requests the purchase information.

CSS

Cascading Style Sheets - an addition to HTML for controlling the presentation of web pages including colour, alignment of text, typography, etc. Different browsers have varying levels of support for CSS and none of them conform exactly to the latest W3C specifications.

Cybercafe

A cafe or bar allowing customers to explore the World Wide Web whilst having a drink or snack, usually charged per half-hour of usage. They are now so ubiquitous that virtually every town in the UK has one.

D

Dialup

'Dialup Access' or a 'Dialup Account' is when a modem is used to gain access to the Internet.

Domain Name

Unique address identifying each site on the Internet. The actual address consists of a series of numbers. But, fortunately for our memories, these addresses are in the form of www.anydomainname.co.uk.

Domain Name Server

Computers connected to the Internet whose job it is to keep track of the IP Addresses and Domain Names of other machines. When called upon, they take the ASCII Domain Name and convert it to the relevant numeric IP Address.

Domain Name System

Allows users to relate to computers on the Internet by using textual addresses (e.g. www.ziskadesigns.co.uk) for ease of use, rather than the IP Address system.

DOS

Disk Operating System - the original, simple operating system developed by Microsoft.

Download

When you transfer information off a remote machine connected to the Internet onto your local machine, you are downloading data.

E

Emoticon

A common symbol used to denote a particular emotion in an e-mail. A happy face would be :-) A sad face would be :-( (you may need to look at them sideways!). Also known as smileys".

F

Firewall

Secures a company or organisation's internal network from unauthorised external access (most commonly in the form of Internet hackers).

Forms

Certain Browsers support electronic fill-in forms. A form on a Web Page can be filled in by users all over the world, and the information sent electronically to the relevant domain site.

Freeware

Software that is allowed to be distributed free by the author, but often with certain conditions applying (i.e. the software cannot be modified etc). May require the user to register their details on a web site.

FTP

File Transfer Protocol - a protocol for moving files over the internet from one computer to another. FTP programmes are used to upload web pages to a web server.

G

GIF

Graphics Interchange Format - developed by Compuserve. GIF is a platform-independent file format, used extensively throughout the Internet for graphic files. The other main file format for graphics on the web is JPEG.

Gigabyte (GB)

A thousand Megabytes.

H

Home Page

On a web site this is usually the main page from which hyperlinks are made to other pages on the site (or other sites). Home pages usually have the name "index.html".

HTML

HyperText Markup Language - the tagging language used to format Web pages. It allows pictures and text to be combined to create Web documents. The most important feature - hypertext - makes it possible for links to be made between different documents.

Hyperlink

On web pages, hyperlinks are highlighted text (usually underlined) or images which, when selected (usually by clicking the mouse button), follow a link to another page. Hyperlinks can also be used to automatically download other files as well as sounds and video clips.

I

ISP

Internet Service Provider - a Company or Organisation, such as Freeserve or Demon, who provide businesses and home users access to the Internet.

Image Map

An image with clickable "hot spots" that work as links. This allows several hyperlinks from a single image file. For example, the image could be of a house, split into different areas, each of which could be clickable and linked to a larger view of that specific area.

J

JPEG

Joint Photographic Experts Group - a standard of image compression developed especially for use on the Internet. Most photographic images can be highly compressed using this method, without greatly diminishing image quality. JPEGs are normally used for displaying photographs on a web page.

K

Keywords

Keywords are words placed in the Meta Tags that are hidden in the section of a web page. They help a search engine to index and find particular web pages.

Kilobyte

1024 bytes, usually rounded down to a thousand bytes for simplicity.

L

LAN

A Local Area Network is a group of computers connected together to form a network.

Link

Links are the connections between web pages. Every time you click on highlighted text or an image to go to another page, you are following a link.

Lycos

A comprehensive and accurate search engine which you'll find at http://www.lycos.co.uk/

M

Modem

MODulator-DEModulator - allows the transmission of digital information over an analogue phone line. It is the piece of hardware that connects your computer to the internet.

Mosaic

Web browser developed by a group of people at NCSA. Provides a Graphical User Interface for accessing data on the World Wide Web.

MPEG

(Motion Picture Experts Group) A video compression format used for movie or animation clips on the World Wide Web.

N

Netiquette

Informal, largely undocumented set of rules designed to make the Web a polite and civilised 'society'. Sadly, netiquette seems to be losing its importance.

Netscape Communications

Creators of Netscape Navigator, one of the two most popular Web browsers in use. They did become a bit notorious after introducing several HTML "extensions" that were unsupported by other browsers. For example, the incredibly stupid and irritating tag.

O

Offline

When your computer performs an operation when it is not connected to any other computers or the internet, it is working offline.

Online

Your computer is working online when it performs an operation and is connected to other computer or the internet.

P

PDF

Portable Network Format - a file format developed by Adobe Systems and used for capturing formatted page layouts for distribution. PDF documents, when viewed with the required Adobe Acrobat Reader, will appear exactly as they were intended.

Public domain

Usually refers to software that anybody can use or modify without authorisation of the author.

Q

Actually, to be honest, we can't think of any technical word beginning with this letter - any suggestions greatly appreciated.

R

Router

Routers connect all the networks that make up the Internet together.

S

Search Engines

Used to find information on the web. With over one billion pages now in existence, finding relevant information is becoming harder and harder. Examples of search engines are Yahoo www.yahoo.com and Google www.google.com

Service Provider

The role of a Service Provider is to provide subscribers a gateway to the Internet. There are hundreds of Service Providers, two of the largest are Freeserve and Demon.

Shareware

Software distributed freely, but usually with certain conditions applying to it. Either the software is released on a trial basis only, and must be registered after a certain period of time, or in other cases no support can be offered with the software without registering it. In some cases direct payment to the author is required.

Snail mail

In the good old days before e-mail became so popular, there was another method that people used to get messages from one location to another. It went something like this - write the letter - buy a stamp - put stamp on letter - walk to the post box - post letter. Wait a day or two and hopefully it will have reached its intended destination.

Surfing

A popular metaphor used to describe a person exploring the World Wide Web.

T

Tags

The formatting codes used to create HTML documents.

U

Upload

Transfer of files off a local computer up to a specified remote computer (as opposed to download where files are pulled off a remote machine).

URL

A Uniform Resource Locater is basically the address of any resource on the Internet. You type the URL into your browser and you are whizzed off to the site.

Usenet
